Why Bangladesh Barred Travel to Israel: Passport Clause Returns in 2025
Bangladesh has officially reinstated the "except Israel" travel restriction in its passports, reviving a long-standing ban that had been removed from the document in 2021. The decision comes in response to growing public pressure and strong nationwide support for the Palestinian cause.
What Happened?
In early April 2025, Bangladesh's government ordered that a specific line — "This passport is valid for all countries of the world except Israel" — be printed once again in all newly issued passports. This move comes as the country witnesses widespread protests condemning Israeli military operations in Gaza.
Although the travel ban on Israel never officially ended, the clause was removed from e-passports in 2021, drawing criticism from many citizens and pro-Palestine groups who saw it as a softening of the country’s stance.
Why Was the Clause Removed Earlier?
Back in 2021, Bangladesh removed the line from passports as part of modernization and to comply with global standards. However, it clarified that the travel ban to Israel remained in place. Despite this clarification, opposition leaders and activists accused the government of indirectly allowing relations with Israel — a country Bangladesh does not recognize diplomatically.
Why Is It Back Now?
Due to recent escalations in the Gaza conflict and a surge in pro-Palestinian support within the country, the government has brought the clause back to show its alignment with public sentiment and historical foreign policy. Several rallies and civil society campaigns urged the administration to act, and now the clause is officially reinstated.
Does This Change Anything Legally?
Practically, nothing new has been introduced in terms of the law — Bangladeshi citizens were already prohibited from traveling to Israel. But symbolically, this clause sends a strong message about Bangladesh’s support for the Palestinian people and its opposition to Israeli policies.
Bangladesh and Israel: No Diplomatic Ties
Bangladesh has never recognized Israel and has no diplomatic relations with it. The country has always supported Palestine and demanded a two-state solution to the ongoing conflict.
