Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has reiterated that only Hindus should be employed at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), the governing body of the world-famous Tirumala temple. His statement comes months after his government transferred non-Hindu employees out of the temple administration, a move that had sparked mixed reactions.
Speaking at a religious event, Naidu stressed the need to preserve the sanctity of the temple. "Tirumala is one of the holiest sites for Hindus, and it should be managed by those who follow and respect the faith," he said.
The Andhra Pradesh government had earlier directed that non-Hindu employees working in TTD should either convert to Hinduism or seek transfer to other government departments. This move aligns with long-standing demands from Hindu religious organizations and devotees, who argue that only practicing Hindus should be involved in temple administration.
Political and Social Reactions
The decision has drawn mixed responses. While Hindu groups and temple committees have welcomed the move, stating that religious institutions should be run by practicing followers, others argue that government jobs should not be restricted based on religion.
Opposition parties and secular organizations have criticized the decision, calling it discriminatory and against the principles of secular governance. Some activists have pointed out that temple management should prioritize competence, experience, and administrative skills over religious identity.
Political analysts believe this move is part of Naidu’s strategy to strengthen his Hindu voter base in Andhra Pradesh. With the TDP-led alliance back in power, Naidu is focusing on pro-Hindu policies to consolidate his position, especially in temple governance matters.
TTD’s Stand on the Issue
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has maintained that its policies have always emphasized Hindu traditions. In the past, there have been controversies over non-Hindu employees, leading to periodic reviews of staffing policies. The TTD management has assured that these decisions are made in the best interest of devotees and temple traditions.
With this renewed stance, the Andhra Pradesh government is expected to implement stricter policies on religious eligibility for temple jobs, further shaping the administration of India’s richest temple.
